Sailboats Unlimited offers a wide range of sailing school programs. We are an affiliate member of the American Sailing Association Professional Training Program. We do, however, tailor our sailing lessons to your individual needs and offer private instruction and smaller classes than other sail training facilities. Our instructors have over 30 years and thousands of miles of sailing, cruising and instructional experience. By offering our classes in the sunny warm climate of Southwest Florida, a sailing course is the perfect addition to your Florida vacation and will open a whole new world for you. ASA COURSES: Basic Keelboat ASA 101 The fundamentals of sailing are explored in this lesson, including the theory of sailing, maneuvering under sail, basic seamanship, rules of the road, knots, safety skills, navigation and buoyage systems. This approximately two day comprehensive course is for beginning sailors, those with rusty skills or anyone wishing to improve their basic important sailing knowledge and skills. This course is the foundation upon which every other skill is built. If you feel you have sufficient experience you may challenge this course for a nominal fee. Basic Coastal Cruising ASA 103 This sailing course includes all aspects of intermediate boat handling and advanced sail trim, boat handling at buoys, docks and slips, anchoring, heavy weather sailing, reefing, diesel inboard engine prep and operation, boat systems, introductory navigation, charts and compass, VHF radio procedures, emergency procedures and man overboard skills. Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) is a prerequisite for this course. Both courses may be taken together over a 3-day period. Bareboat Cruising ASA 104 This sailing course prepares you to bareboat charter up to and including a 40 ft. sailing yacht. More complex systems and equipment are explored as well as the handling and seamanship required by a bigger and heavier yacht. We cover trip planning, provisioning, meal prep and sleeping aboard as well as maintenance procedures, short passage making and watch standing, coastal navigation, fixes, speed/distance calculation, dead reckoning, making landfall, heaving to, mooring and anchoring. We also reinforce the various tools learned in both 101 and 103. This course, along with coastal navigation (ASA 105) is essential for chartering in the Caribbean. This is a 4-day live aboard class including at least 1 overnight sail. ASA 101 and 103 are prerequisites. Coastal Navigation ASA 105 This intensive navigation course covers everything from deduced reckoning to GPS navigation. The goal is to provide you the skills necessary to safely navigate a vessel in coastal or inland waters. This sailing course can combine with ASA 104 for a 6-day onboard adventure. ASA 101 and 103 are prerequisites. You don’t need to worry about the Perfect Storm. We’ll teach you the mistakes and pitfalls to avoid and for those that you simply can’t avoid, due to Mother Nature, how to make safe the boat and survive. |
